Types of Soap Explained: Toilet Soap, Bathing Bar, Glycerin, Cold-Process and More

By Daksha Organics team ยท Updated 6 Nov 2026 ยท 4 min read

The main types of soap you will find in India are toilet soaps, bathing bars, glycerin (transparent) soaps, cold-process and hot-process handmade soaps, and liquid soaps. They differ in what cleans your skin (true soap or synthetic detergent), how much real soap they contain, and how they are made. Knowing the type helps you read the label and choose a bar that suits your skin.

What is a toilet soap?

In Indian labelling, a toilet soap is a bar made mainly of true soap, the salt formed when oils react with an alkali. It must meet IS 2888:2004 and show a grade: Grade 1 (76% TFM or more), Grade 2 (70% or more) or Grade 3 (60% or more). Most everyday bath soaps in supermarkets are toilet soaps, usually made in large factories from pre-made soap noodles. If the grades are new to you, read what TFM in soap means.

What is a bathing bar?

A bathing bar looks like soap but is defined differently. It may have less than 60% TFM, or it may be partly or fully built on synthetic detergents. Bathing bars follow IS 13498. Many beauty bars are in this group. They can feel creamy and mild because of added moisturisers, but they are a different category from toilet soap, which is why the pack says "bathing bar".

What is a syndet bar?

Syndet is short for synthetic detergent. These bars use lab-made cleansers rather than saponified oils and are often formulated close to skin pH. Dermatologists sometimes suggest them for very sensitive skin. On Indian packs they usually appear as bathing bars.

What is glycerin or transparent soap?

Glycerin is a natural by-product of soapmaking that draws moisture to the skin. Transparent soaps are made clear by adding solvents such as alcohol, sugar or extra glycerin. Many are "melt-and-pour" bases bought ready-made and remelted with colour and fragrance. They can be pleasant, but the clear look comes from additives, not from extra soap.

What are cold-process and hot-process soaps?

  • Cold-process soap is made by mixing oils with lye at low temperature, pouring into moulds and leaving the bars to rest for several weeks. The natural glycerin stays in the bar, and the maker controls every oil from scratch.
  • Hot-process soap follows the same chemistry but cooks the mixture with heat to speed up saponification. The bars are ready sooner and look more rustic.

Both are usually made in small batches. Our guide to cold-process vs machine-made soap goes deeper.

What about liquid soap and castile soap?

Liquid soap is made with potassium hydroxide instead of sodium hydroxide, which gives a soft soap that dissolves in water. Many shower gels and handwashes, though, are detergent-based rather than true soap. Castile soap traditionally means soap made mostly or entirely from olive oil.

What makes a soap "Ayurvedic" or "herbal"?

These words describe the ingredients, not the soap type. An Ayurvedic or herbal soap uses herbs and oils from traditional practice, such as neem, turmeric, manjistha or sandalwood. It can be a toilet soap, a bathing bar or a handmade cold-process bar, so check the label for the TFM and the base. We compare the two approaches in Ayurvedic soap vs regular soap.

Which type should I choose?

  • For everyday bathing and good value, a Grade 1 toilet soap is a reliable choice.
  • If you like knowing exactly which oils touch your skin, a cold-process soap with a full ingredient list makes that easy.
  • If your skin is very sensitive or you have a skin condition, speak to a dermatologist, who may suggest a syndet bar.
  • Whatever you pick, patch test new soaps on your inner arm first.

Key takeaways

  • Toilet soap and bathing bar are legal categories in India; the pack must say which.
  • Syndet and many beauty bars use detergents rather than true soap.
  • Cold-process soaps keep their natural glycerin and are made in small batches.
  • "Herbal" and "Ayurvedic" describe ingredients, not the soap type.

Our own bar is a cold-process toilet soap: the Herbal Plus Natural Skin Care Soap, with a coconut-oil base and 85.96% TFM. Ask us anything or order on WhatsApp.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between toilet soap and bathing bar?

Toilet soap is mainly true soap and carries a Grade 1, 2 or 3 TFM rating under IS 2888. A bathing bar has lower TFM or uses synthetic detergents and follows IS 13498.

Is glycerin soap better than normal soap?

Glycerin helps skin hold moisture, but transparent bars get their clarity from added solvents. Cold-process soaps keep their natural glycerin without needing to be transparent.

Is herbal soap a separate type of soap?

No. Herbal or Ayurvedic describes the ingredients. The bar itself can be a toilet soap, a bathing bar or a handmade soap, so check the label.
